Reducing health & safety risks, and insurance premiums

We're active in a number of sectors but an overriding focus for Bodytrak is improving health and safety in a host of industrial scenarios. By improving health and safety conditions, we can also help reduce insurance claims and premiums.

Industrial workforces are inherently exposed to risks through the nature of their work and the environments they operate in. While health and safety standards are continuing to improve, mitigating all risks and dangers associated with workforces cannot be comprehensive. With the recent introduction of health and safety fines, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) initially issued £7.09m in fines. The second reporting year saw a dramatic increase to £12.96m, an increase of 83% (Clyde & Co, 2017). While fines and private litigation are the most extreme forms of financial punishment for failings in Health and Safety standards, insurance premiums are part and parcel of the cost of doing business, and premiums keep increasing year on year.

Common hazards in a typical industrial workplace may include: working from height, movement of vehicles, operation of and noise from plant machinery, and slips, trips and falls. Other risks include the external environment, such as elevated temperature and confined and poorly ventilated surroundings. Symptoms could include temperature-related injuries (hyper- and hypo- thermia), cardiac strain and other long term medical conditions. Mitigating these risks within a controlled local environment is often easier than with lone workers. Outcomes for lone workers are often exacerbated, as acute injuries and illness often go undetected for longer periods of time or until an alarm is raised.

With so many factors to take into consideration, it makes for an incredibly complex and, potentially, costly problem for health, safety, environmental and quality managers to solve. Bodytrak has been developed to address some of the major concerns faced by health and safety managers across a range of industries from construction, oil and gas, logistics to manufacturing.

Bodytrak can provide real-time automated alerts to certain wellness markers with the aim of preventing injury and protecting lives by taking accurate measurements of core body temperature (CBT) and heart rate. Importantly for employers, Bodytrak also features a built-in fall detection algorithm. Once this alert is triggered, a remote health and safety manager can monitor and determine the wellbeing of the individual through real-time vital signs tracking and open communication channels. This means the appropriate intervention to the situation can be implemented, resulting in faster treatment, saving time, costly interventions and resources.

Bodytrak can also be instrumental in monitoring and reducing noise exposure from machinery and plant equipment. Bodytrak aims to advance the long term hearing protection available for workforces, and as a result help to reduce future claims for noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Current hearing protection devices, such as large ear defenders, are effective when worn, but they compromise situational awareness for the wearer. Bodytrak integrates hearing protection requirements with audio communications, providing a continuous barrier to loud noise and the ability for the wearer to hear someone talking next to them without having to remove the earpiece.

Through measuring multiple physiological vital signs, fall detection and noise exposure within a single device and in real-time means warning signs can be identified early enabling rapid intervention. In the longer term it could also improve worker health and wellbeing overall, and perhaps reduce the risk of injury as well as reduce the costs of fines, compensation, lost productivity or long term sickness absence, private litigation and even insurance premiums.
